The first-workspace guide

A thoughtful handover
starts here.

Start with the Free workspace, make it your client’s own, then preview and publish. No account or licence required.

WordPress 6.6+PHP 8.1+Single-site WordPressAdministrator access

Download PanelKind 1.6.1 directly from this website. Pro licences are available through Freemius for 1, 5 or 1,000 sites, with the same Pro features in every paid plan.

Step 01

Install PanelKind

Use Free Download above to save the plugin ZIP. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add Plugin → Upload Plugin. Upload the ZIP, install it and activate it as the administrator who will manage the workspace. Free needs no account or licence; you can skip optional account setup. Open PanelKind in the WordPress sidebar.

Step 02

Choose who the workspace is for

Open Roles & Permissions and choose an existing role, or create your one Free custom role from an appropriate native permission base. Assign the client View to the roles that need it, then review their resource permissions. Existing WordPress and third-party roles do not use the custom-role allowance.

Step 03

Make the workspace feel familiar

In Sidebar & View, rename, reorder or hide destinations, choose icons and add links or separators. Free supports Main plus two direct child sections. Add the client’s name and logo, choose an accent colour and adjust layout and interface cleanup. Pro adds more Views, nested sections, advanced styling and white-label controls.

Step 04

Make the starter content your own

New installations start with Welcome, Quick actions and Help and support, plus one Website Guide. Edit them for your client. All seven widget types are available on Free; delete an unused library entry before adding a replacement if all three slots are occupied. Reusing a widget in another permitted location costs no extra slot.

Step 05

Save, preview and publish

Save the shared draft and select Preview. Explore it as the intended role or user and inspect access. Review the changes, then choose Publish. Both editions include this workflow, revision history, recovery and safe mode, with no monthly save or publish quota.

Step 06

Try the client’s real workflow

Assign the client’s role in WordPress Users and confirm the intended View is published. Sign in with a test client account. Check the landing page, editing tasks, private guides and sign-out, along with restricted destinations and third-party workflows.

Before you hand over

Ready for their first login?

  • The client reaches the intended View and landing page.
  • They can edit the content they need.
  • Guides and support details are easy to find.
  • Permissions have been checked with a real account.
  • The workspace configuration is published.

Keeping PanelKind current

Updates, on your terms.

Before the WordPress directory release, Free receives no automatic update package. Download a newer ZIP from this website, then use Plugins → Add Plugin → Upload Plugin and choose WordPress’s option to replace the installed plugin.

Pro updates arrive through Freemius while the licence has update entitlement. Delivery requires Freemius connectivity/consent and a published downloadable release. Automatic installation follows the site owner’s WordPress preference; a paid licence does not switch it on for you.

Keep a copy, or start another site

Back up here.
Transfer with Pro.

Free and Pro: same-site backups. Download and restore a signed PanelKind configuration backup for this WordPress installation. Store it privately: it contains user references. The signature is tied to the site URL, blog ID and authentication salt; editing the file or changing the URL or salts can invalidate it.

Restore keeps the current owner/delegate and retention settings. Referenced users and native roles must still exist. This backs up PanelKind configuration, not the site’s database, media or native-role definitions.

Pro: portable configuration. Export and import configuration between sites, including older portable exports. Portable files omit owner/delegate identities, individual assignments, individual access rules and individual audience IDs. Native custom-role definitions stay site-specific.
